Axis is an independent Istanbul publisher. We build our list slowly and deliberately, and literature comes first.

 

Literature at Axis

Our literary list brings writers who work at the edges of form, memory and language into Turkish. Our translated fiction includes Jamaica Kincaid (At the Bottom of the River), Esther Kinsky (Rombo) and Immanuel Mifsud (Jutta Heim; In the Name of the Father (and of the Son)). Alongside them we publish Turkish writers such as Necati Tosuner, Ahu Müşerref and jilet Sabahat.

 

Growing our fiction list

We are actively acquiring contemporary literary fiction in translation. We read in English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese, and we follow Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Dutch literature through agents and translators. We are drawn to:

— distinctive, formally ambitious voices, from debuts to established authors not yet published in Turkish

— novels of memory, displacement, family and the body, and fiction from postcolonial and diasporic perspectives

— selected modern classics that deserve a new Turkish life

We give every book a dedicated translator and editor, careful design, and a publication window agreed with the rightsholder. Where available, we work with national translation-support programmes.

 

Beyond literature

Our non-fiction series give the list its intellectual backbone:

— Axis Psikanaliz: Lacanian clinical psychoanalysis, including Bruce Fink, Paul Verhaeghe, Stijn Vanheule, Antonio Quinet and Dany Nobus.

— Axis Felsefe: contemporary philosophy, including Mladen Dolar, Lorenzo Chiesa and Samo Tomšič.

— Axis Politika and Axis Eleştiri: politics and cultural criticism, including Todd McGowan, Renata Salecl, and Slavoj Žižek, Eric Santner and Kenneth Reinhard's The Neighbor.
